Hea-Jin Lee Use Case

Faculty & Institution

  • Faculty: Hea-Jin Lee
  • Institution: The Ohio State University at Lima
  • EPP area / program: Mathematics methods

Course Information

  • Course title: EDUTL 5108: Teaching Mathematics Age 3-Grade 5; EDUTL 5270: Teaching Mathematics Grades 4-9
  • Course duration: 15-week semester
  • Implementation timing: Autumn 2025 semester

AI Integration Overview

  • Use case title: From Simulation to Practice
  • AI role: AI-simulated student and practice partner for feedback and diagnostic thinking
  • AI tools used: AI tools are discussed broadly; examples in policy language include ChatGPT, Grammarly, Perplexity, DeepL, and Claude
  • Purpose: Give preservice teachers low-stakes opportunities to interpret student mathematical thinking, recognize misconceptions, provide feedback, and reflect on instructional responses.

Activity / Task Description

The sequence connected written student work analysis with AI-simulated teaching practice. Preservice teachers first analyzed student work samples from field settings and wrote feedback. They then engaged in an AI simulation with a student, responded across multiple turns, received follow-up feedback, and reflected on their teaching moves. Later, they completed a revised written analysis of whole-class data and ended with a second, more extended AI simulation.

Do / Do-Not Guidance

  • Documented do’s: Make AI expectations clear from the beginning; require AI disclosure; model how to evaluate AI responses; give students time to revise AI-supported work.
  • Documented do-nots: Do not assume students know how to use AI well; do not evaluate only the final product; do not allow private or identifying information in AI tools; do not make AI the center of the course.

Evidence & Reflections

Lee reported that AI supported planning, assessment, task design, feedback, and response to student thinking. The work also revealed gaps in students’ ability to evaluate instructional materials and explain why a teaching decision was appropriate.
