Liza Bondurant and Stephanie Casey Use Case

Faculty & Institution

  • Faculty: Liza Bondurant; Stephanie Casey
  • Institution: Mississippi State University; Eastern Michigan University
  • EPP area / program: Secondary mathematics teacher preparation

Course Information

  • Course title: Secondary Math Methods; MATH 305: Technology as a Problem Solving Tool for Secondary Teachers
  • Course duration: 16 weeks for Bondurant; 15 weeks for Casey
  • Implementation timing: Bondurant used Colleague AI across weeks 1-16 for digital simulations, with the probability lesson project in week 14. Casey implemented the focal unit in week 12 for one week.

AI Integration Overview

  • Use case title: Using Colleague AI and CODAP to Teach Probability Simulations
  • AI role: Instructional design thought partner and lesson quality reviewer
  • AI tools used: Colleague AI, including the Claire chat; CODAP Sampler for probability simulation
  • Purpose: Help preservice teachers revise an Illustrative Mathematics Grade 7 probability lesson by adding CODAP Sampler simulations and improving the lesson against quality measures.

Activity / Task Description

Students selected an Illustrative Mathematics lesson aligned to Grade 7 probability standards 7.SP.C.6-8, saved the original lesson, uploaded a CODAP Sampler guide, and prompted Colleague AI for ways to add probability simulations. They tried AI suggestions in CODAP, edited the lesson in Colleague AI, used AI review/quality measures, made final revisions, and submitted the original lesson, final edited lesson, and a reflection. The study design also included pre/post Intelligent-TPACK surveys and Colleague AI chat history.

Do / Do-Not Guidance

  • Documented do’s: Try the task yourself before assigning it; set a focused goal; align the AI task with the existing syllabus; stay flexible because the technology changes.
  • Documented do-nots: Do not write overly long directions; do not ignore preservice teachers’ dispositions toward AI.

Evidence & Reflections

The faculty reported that some students had difficulty searching for lessons by standard, so they may provide direct lesson links in the future. Casey also noted that one student remained strongly opposed to AI and that a one-on-one conversation would have helped her better understand that perspective.
